Happy Canada Day! When it’s announced that a person, or several people, are receiving the Order of Canada, it’s basically a very exciting time here in Ottawa, and all throughout Canada. This year’s recipients range from a comedian to a spaceman. Amongst the recipients this year is Guy Gavriel Kay, author of numerous novels, which have sold over two million copies and have been translated into 22 languages. By Laura W It’s Canada Day, and we’re celebrating here at IWG. Farley Mowat was, and still is, one of Canada’s most famous authors (and environmentalists). He sadly passed away in May 2014, but his books are still very much remembered. Let’s have a look at Farley’s fantastic life. By Laura W As it’s Canada Day, we’re having a look at some of Canada’s best in book form. In all honesty, Canada isn’t usually the first country that one thinks of for spectacular authors, books or anything else really. However, the country is brimming full of talent, and today is one of the best days for us to have a good look at Canada’s talents. Let’s have a look at some of the best books that have come out of Canada. All of the authors, unless otherwise specified, are Canadian, and many of the stories take place within the gorgeous country. By Laura W Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire is one of those few books that have made a successful adaptation to another source of media. In the case of Wicked, that form of media is the stage. There has been talk of turning the musical into a film for years, and it has been in and out of “production” for ages. This is my dream casting for the book version of Wicked. By Laura W Books are often used as source material for a HUGE number of things. Whether it be a series of books being turned into a television series (like Game of Thrones), or into films (like Harry Potter, The Lord of the Rings, War Horse, Memoirs of a Geisha, The Hunger Games, Sherlock Holmes and more), books provide an incredible amount of material, However, what we don’t always hear, or read, about is books that have been turned into stage shows. Such books turned into shows have included Les Miserables, Oliver!, The Colour Purple, and Big River. Let’s have a look at books that have made the transition from paper to stage. By Laura W Back on Mothering Sunday, we had a look at some of the worst mothers in literary history, from Margaret White to Mrs. Wormwood. Now that Father’s Day has rolled around, let’s have a look at some of the worst fathers in literature. By Laura W The Nanny Book Project is a project that I started last year, for my twin charges. While I am no longer their nanny, I do still take care of them. The project involves people telling the twins what their favourite children’s books were and why. All of this was inspired by the children’s literature segment of the London 2012 Opening Ceremonies. The response has been massive. I’ve had responses from television stars, to comedians, to Oscar and Grammy winners. Last week, I promised that there would be answers from several members of the I’m With Geek team. I’ll be spreading the answers out over several articles, so that there will be updates – you never know what may happen over the next little while. Here they are! By Laura W It’s at times like these, that I feel my childhood is slowly starting to truly end. Eric Hill, the man behind the beloved Spot the Dog series, has died at the age of 86. He passed away at his home in California, following a brief illness. His death was confirmed by his publisher, Puffin. By Laura W How, exactly, does a nanny, a book project, and IWG go hand in hand? Let me tell you. No, I am not Mary Poppins (who is, by the way, an extremely famous book character), but I am a nanny, who started a book project for my charges. The project started last year, fell apart, started up again, and since then, has grown bigger than I could have ever imagined. Exclusive to IWG, this is the story of The Nanny Book Project. You may want to read this – I’ve had some massive responses, from Royalty to Heads of States, Oscar and Grammy winners to Tony and Golden Globe winners. |
